The son of an influential politician was charged with murder, a day after his dramatic surrender ended a six-month manhunt.
Duangchalerm Yoobamrung, 21, was denied bail by a Bangkok court, which accepted the prosecution's charges against him and ordered him held in prison.
The trial will begin on May 17. Duangchalerm was charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 29, 2001 shooting of police Sgt. Suvichai Rodwimud at a Bangkok pub. He also was charged with conspiring to commit the murder, illegally carrying a firearm in public and obstructing police work. If convicted, he faces the maximum death penalty.
Duangchalerm says he is innocent.
