The special court in Nyala town, South Darfur State, has sentenced 87 convicts to death and imprisonment of one accused for 10 years and acquitted eight defendants due to lack of evidence. In Sudan special courts are often set up to try such unique cases. In that case, the special court, chaired by Judge Mukhtar Ibrahim Adam, was set up by the judicial organ of South Darfur State, for trial of 96 persons accused in recent incidents in the state.The accused persons faced charges under a number of articles of the criminal law, including armed robbery, murder, wearing military uniform illegally and breaching public tranquillity.The dispute between the two tribes started with an argument in a market in which two al-Muaalia tribesmen killed a member of the Reizagat tribe.The convicts have the right to appeal the sentences passed against them before the Supreme Court in Khartoum.
