The Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions submitted an urgent appeal on behalf of Khamit Memet and two other ethnic Uighur Chinese nationals who were reportedly in imminent danger of being extradited to the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region where they faced possible executions. All three men were apparently arrested while attempting to cross the border between China and Kazakhstan and were being detained in the "investigation isolation prison" of the Committee of National Security in Almaty (E/CN.4/1999/39/Add.1).
