The special tribunal to hear the cases of former president U Ne Win's three grandsons, and son-in-law U Aye Zaw Win decided that they would be charged with 'high treason' and enticing military officers to be involved.
The three young men had never been interested in and involved in politics and they were not in a position at all that they could carry out a coup, said the defence lawyer. And prosecution lawyer U Myint Naing quoted the Penal Code section 121(D) as saying the accused are guilty of a plot to overthrow "a constitutionally elected unit".
The penalties for committing and conspiring high treason are life imprisonment or death sentence. The trial is due to commence on July 1.
