The Speedy Trial Court in Chittagong, Bangladesh, sentenced five people to death, including four Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, and nine others to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Nurul Islam. Those sentenced to death by hanging were A.H.M. Biplob, Abdul Jabber alias Lavlo, Alamgir Hossain alias Ziku, Tanvir Hyder alias Rinku and Ziaur Rahaman alias Shipon, the first three of which were absconding and sentenced in absentia. Nurul Islam had been kidnapped from his uncle Nurul Huda's house at Modhupur town on September 18, 2000. His body, cut into pieces, was recovered from a sack in the river Meghna on September 25.
