The state prosecutor's office in the Central African Republic opened an enquiry into the summary execution by security forces of three youths in Bangui on December 3, the country's top attorney said. "We can't yet say where the responsibilities lie for this rather serious judicial incident," chief prosecutor Firmin Feindirolors said in a radio interview. After a hold-up, several young men from a citizens' self-defence committee in a southern district of the capital were arrested. Most were subsequently freed but security forces killed three of them without explanation. Prime Minister Abel Goumba denounced the executions as an "appalling act unworthy of a state practising the rule of law".
