That means state voters will have their say on the issue, in a November advisory referendum. Democrats attempted to amend the resolution, which would have sent the measure back to the Assembly where it was passed last week. Democrat Jon Erpenbach noted the state has not executed anyone in 150 years. "We don't need it," said Erpenbach. But Republican Dave Zien, citing heinous crimes in Wisconsin and elsewhere, argued for the referendum.
Democratic amendments, to move the vote to the September ballot and change the wording of the advisory question, were defeated. The referendum will be on the ballot in November, along with statewide races for governor and attorney general.
