a multimillionaire and three contract killers were sentenced to death in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, for killing a business rival and injuring two others. Another 11 accomplices received jail terms up to life imprisonment.
The mastermind, Lu Yunpeng, 35, was the president of the Henan-based Yunpeng Cultural Development Co Ltd. From late 2004, the company opened classes in more than 100 cities across the Chinese mainland. It offered courses to prepare for master's degree national entrance examinations.
A college professor identified as Qiao also operated similar classes in Kaifeng, Henan. In March 2005, Wang Yancui, who worked for Lu, lured Qiao to a hotel in the provincial capital Zhengzhou. Lu's cousin, Zhao Mingjie, 32, the head of Lu's Kaifeng business, and three other men then broke into Qiao's room and choked him to death after beating him.
In August 2004, on Lu's orders, five men poured sulphuric acid on a rival at a university in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The victim suffered serious burns.
In July 2002, Lu hired people to injure another professor named in Jinan, capital of Shandong Province.
