The Supreme Court imposed a death sentence on a 31-year-old man convicted of murdering his lover and her husband in a plan to get insurance money. The ruling, by Supreme Court Justice Park Jae-yoon, rejected an appeal by the man, identified as Kang. He was convicted of murder and attempted murder. "The defendant cannot be exempted from capital punishment because of his brutal murders and refusal to compensate the victim's families," Park said. Kang was arrested in November 1999 on a charge of conspiring with his lover to murder her husband after putting him on a large insurance policy. Kang then murdered his lover to cover up the crime, prosecutors said. Prior to the murders, Kang also allegedly attempted to kill his wife in a disguised car accident after having her buy life insurance. The wife survived the plot, but suffered an injury requiring 16 weeks of treatment.
