Three robbers who sacked 34 temples when disguised as police were sentenced to death in southern Fujian Province by the Higher People's Court of Fujian. Another six members of the gang were either given death sentences with a two-year reprieve or life and set terms of imprisonment. Between August of 1998 and May of 2000, Xie Chengwang and Chen Zhudi, the two ringleaders of the gang, and the other gang members reportedly disguised themselves as policemen and entered temples, robbing some 150 people of cash, gold and jewellery.
