The Thai Criminal Court sentenced four men to death for possessing more than 31 kilograms of heroin with intent to sell, although three of them had no drugs on them when they were arrested.
Boonsong Kamthan, 30, Asurpha Loamee, 27, Arthit Kasemchit, 24, and Sombat Mongduang, 32, received death sentences while female suspect Uam Sutanan, 29, was acquitted for lack of evidence.
Boonsong admitted his guilt throughout the interrogation and trial while Asurpha and Arthit admitted their involvement in drug trafficking only during interrogation. They retracted their confessions in court, claiming that police forced them to confess. Uam and Sombat claimed to know nothing about the drugs.
The Criminal Court sentenced Boonsong, Asurpha, Arthit and Sombat to death. It said the sentences could not be commuted given the huge amount of heroin involved despite the confessions.
