the Third US Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned the death sentence of Jack F. Outten Junior. The court ruled that his lawyers failed to adequately present mitigating factors that might have resulted in a life sentence. Outten, white, 40, and 2 cousins were convicted in 1993 of robbing 62-year-old Wilson Mannon and beating him to death with a hammer on Jan 12, 1992.
Along with cousins Steven and Nelson Shelton killed Mannon after a night of drinking. Nelson Shelton was executed on March 17, 1995. Steven Shelton was also sentenced to death.
