The Tokyo District Court sentenced a 49-year-old fisherman to death on a charge of murdering two other fishermen and severely injuring a third aboard a fishing boat in Tokyo Bay in 2000.
Yukio Isogai from Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, stabbed to death Toshikazu Hirano, 51, and Ryoichi Nakamura, 28, after boarding Hirano's fishing vessel from a leisure boat off
Haneda airport on the night of July 27, 2000, the court ruled. Isogai owed Hirano 5 million yen.
Isogai also stabbed another fisherman who sustained serious injuries, the court ruled.
Presiding Judge Junichiro Akiyoshi said in his ruling that Isogai had committed "a brutal crime which made light of human life by attacking the three defenceless victims on the boat's deck from where there was no escape."
