The trial of British born Omar Saeed Sheikh and three alleged accomplices accused of murdering the American reporter Daniel Pearl opened in Karachi amid tight security but was adjourned after just one hour.
The hearing began in the central jail of Karachi, the city where Pearl was murdered, because of fears by the government that militant extremists supporting Sheikh may stage terrorist attacks against a regular courthouse. Khawaja Naveed, a defence lawyer, said the court was adjourned until April 12 after the defence asked to see key evidence.
The evidence against Sheikh is largely based on two e-mails, which were sent to newspapers by the kidnapping group threatening to kill Pearl. The e-mails were allegedly traced back to Sheikh.
