He was 14 years old when the Sri Lankan Police arrested him in 1992. The young accused was detained by the Sri Lankan Police under Emergency Regulations (ER) for 12 years and was released in July 2003 on surety bail. Twenty-four years after the alleged crime, Sivakantharajah, now aged 36 and a married man, was sentenced to death.
