The Uganda Human Rights Initiative (UFHRI) thanked President Yoweri Museveni for commuting sentences of 16 convicts on 13th July and called for a moratorium on the death penalty. The UFHRI said the presidential pardon was a good "gesture and a sign of commitment to the meaningful enjoyment of the right to life". The FHRI statement signed by Mary Kaboggoza, the acting executive director, said the organization would continue to campaign against the death penalty as "it is an ultimate denial of human rights specifically the right to life".
