Two Iranians, Mehdi Varmazyari and Safar Shah-Hasanlu, were publicly hanged at dawn. The two had been convicted of murdering two bank-tellers and robbery. Their death sentences had been upheld by the Supreme Court. Over 4,000 people were reported to have gathered to witness the event.
