Three former Guatemalan paramilitary men on massacre charges had their death penalty commuted to 50 years imprisonment for lack of direct evidence. Fermin Lajuj, Pedro Gonzalez Gomez and Carlos Chen, of the now dissolved Civilian Self-Defence Patrols, were accused of participating in the killing of 70 women and 107 children in two towns in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, on March 13, 1982. They had been sentenced to death by lethal injection at the first trial in 1998 and the second in October 1999.
