On February 19, two Salvadoran men, Dimas Samayoa Garcia and Lucas Revolorio Samayoa, were sentenced to death after a quick trial. They were arrested in Adelanto, Guatemala, on February 5, accused of belonging to a criminal gang called the Guanacos, which has been held responsible for the killing of at least 10 Guatemalans in recent years. Guatemalan leaders have been approached by Archbishop Fernando Saenz Lacalle, seeking clemency for the two men, but Salvadoran officials revealed that the two convicts have lengthy criminal records in their own country and the Government would not intervene to stop their execution.
