Three Indians were sentenced to death by a Dubai court for possessing and dealing in drugs.
The three were identified as Hamid Soofi Mohiyuddin, 40, Sulaiman Rahman Ibrahim, 30 and Sebastian Kurian, 33. They were nabbed in a sting operation by Dubai police in May. An informer had alerted the anti-Drug Department that Hamid was in possession of more than two kilos of drugs. A trap was set to buy the drugs for 300,000 dirhams and Hamid asked the other two Indians to bring the drugs from a boat called 'Dawn' docked at Sharjah port.
The three were arrested when the drugs were brought from Sharjah and was being handed over to the decoy. The police searched the boat and Sulaiman's house for more drugs but were unable to find any, the daily 'Gulf News said.
Drug trafficking is a major social problem in the UAE and is punishable by death, but capital punishment has been given only in rare cases so far.
