Three key rebels who helped coup leader George Speight to overthrow Fiji's first ethnic-government in 2000 were jailed for three years each.
Ilisoni Ligairi, Josefa Savua and James Speight, brother of George Speight, received the sentence following a plea bargain with prosecutors.
The three had initially been charged with treason, which George Speight was convicted of on February 18. He was sentenced to death but the punishment was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Ten of Speight's accomplices, including Ligairi, Savua and James Speight, pleaded guilty to lesser charges related to the coup. Four of the others received sentences of two years each while the remaining three were given 18-month prison terms.
"We expect some of the defendants already sentenced to walk very soon," a defence lawyer Jack Flanagan told Reuters.
"Speight took the weight of the treason charge on his own shoulders."
Two others still face treason charges. Lawyers involved in the case expect those charges to also be reduced, but their case was adjourned until March.
