Three people were sentenced to death for their part in a contract killing ordered by a local Communist Party boss which led to two more deaths than planned. The sentences were handed down by the Intermediate People's Court in Yuncheng, Shanxi.Fu Fugui, secretary of the Communist Party branch in Huaishuao village near Yuncheng, had an argument with Yang Baojun, the deputy head of the village committee, and hired two locals to kill him. The contract killers, Wei Hongfu and Li Weidong, went to Yang's home on February 12, 1998, and not only shot him but also his mother and another villager who happened to be there. A fourth accomplice, Cheng Longjun, who had helped Fu pick the contract killers, was jailed for life.
