Three policemen convicted of killing three prominent businessmen in Jinja, on suspicion that they were armed robbers, were sentenced to death by the High court.
It was alleged that on December 16, 2000,Lawrence Okello, Denis Mujuni and Max Olenyo intercepted a car on the Jinja-Tororo highway, Uganda, that was occupied by the deceased.
They ordered John Walube, Ronald Walube and George Kamuhanda out of the vehicle and shot them dead, All Africa reported. Judge David Wangutusi said the murders were not only gruesome, but were carried out with malice afore-thought.
"You claimed the lives of innocent people and this court finds you guilty of murder. I sentence you to death," Wangutsi ruled.
In their defence, the officers claimed they were carrying out routine night patrol duty while travelling on a Police pick-up truck, when Okello, who was the in charge of the squad, received a message from their superiors.
They said the message stated that a saloon vehicle registration number UAB 787J was suspected to occupied by robbers.
Justice Wangutusi dismissed the policemen's assertion that their actions were driven by instructions from their superiors as evidence revealed that the number was not among Police records.
