Three survivors of the boat tragedy in which 350 asylum seekers drowned confronted the alleged organiser and called for his execution.
The three Iraqi men were taken to police headquarters in Jakarta to identify a 29-year-old Egyptian, known as Abu Quassey. He is alleged to be the mastermind of a people smuggling racket that had promised to sail them to Australia.
The men, who lost relatives when an overloaded boat sank off Java in October with the loss of over 350 Iraqis and Afghanis, claimed Quassey charged them up to $A1950 per family for the voyage. Only 44 people survived.
The three said it was up to Indonesian immigration officials to punish Quassey, but they believed that he should be put to death.
"Abu was responsible for all the 350 people on the boat and they are all dead," Ahmed, an Iraqi, said.
"In Iraq if someone kills a person, he should be killed also. Because Abu was responsible for the death of 350 people, he should be killed 350 times."
