Deochan Ganga, 25, a fisherman, and Dinesh Benjamin, 24, a gardener, two men on trial for killing a man by hanging him from a shed, were found guilty by the San Fernando High Court, Trinidad and Tobago, and sentenced to death by hanging.
The State’s case alleged that Ganga and Benjamin beat Sunil while he was lying in a hammock. Both accused men then tied a rope around Sunil’s neck and hung him from a shed at the back of his home in Penal on July 13, 2003.
In their defence, Ganga and Benjamin claimed that they were in their respective homes when the killing occurred. They testified that upon their arrest, police officers beat them inside the Penal Police Station.
