Under pressure from voters over rising violent crime, several Caribbean governments, including Trinidad, have joined forces to create a regional court to ease the application of the death penalty.
The Caribbean Court of Justice will replace the UK Privy Council, which has traditionally served several former colonies as the final appellate court in criminal matters and has repeatedly blocked the use of the death penalty.
