Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit warned Abdullah Ocalan that he was risking his neck by issuing statements from death row. "Ocalan and circles who support him are trying to direct the regime in Turkey, they are making statements in this direction" Ecevit told reporters in Ankara. "This is unacceptable. It would be to his advantage to keep quiet," he said.
In Turkey Ecevit faced mounting protest from hundreds of families and relatives of soldiers killed fighting the PKK. In the central Anatolian city of Kayseri, hundreds of people bearing red and white Turkish flags and large framed pictures of dead young men, staged a rally against the delay. "Our whole aim is to prevent developments which would lead to new martyrs," Ecevit said, defending the decision. "We have adopted the most constructive approach."
