Twenty-five south Sudanese students were given a four-month suspended sentence for celebrating the founding of the main rebel group in Sudan's civil war, defence lawyers said.
The students were arrested by police during a festival at el-Nilein University in Khartoum to mark the 19th anniversary of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) on May 21. They had originally faced 15 charges including undermining the constitutional order, which carries the death penalty.
The judge did not mention the more serious charges in his ruling at the conclusion of the two-day trial. The students were found guilty of disturbing public peace and ordered to serve only three weeks of the sentence.
