Two middle-aged women were sentenced to death by the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court for possession of methamphetamine pills with intent to sell.
Sommai Chaemchan, 38, and Paiwan Pantha, 36, were arrested in August 2001 while delivering 400,000 speed pills to undercover anti-narcotics police. The woman who made the deal, known only as Uan, 40, remains at large.
Uan made the deal with police officers posing as drug-buyers, agreeing to sell the pills for Bt4 million. Sommai and Paiwan were nabbed while making the delivery, but Uan escaped. The two women admitted knowing Uan but pleaded innocent, said they did not know what was in the plastic bags Uan had asked them to deliver.
