The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is taking measures to have the death sentence lifted from Ukrainian national Viktoria Mamontova, who was convicted of heroin possession and sentenced to death in Thailand
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is taking measures to have the death sentence lifted from Ukrainian national Viktoria Mamontova, who was convicted of heroin possession and sentenced to death in Thailand.
The consular department of the Thai Foreign Ministry believes that there are "real possibilities of lightening the sentence," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Sergei Borodenkov told reporters in Kyiv.
Borodenkov said that Mamontova's death sentence may be replaced with life in prison. He also said the king of Thailand may pardon her.
Mamontova is the first Ukrainian national to be sentenced to death outside Ukraine since the country became independent [in 1991].
