A resolution committing the Italian government to "intervene with the competent organs with the aim of suspending the execution" of Dominique Green slated for October 26 in the US state of Texas was tabled in the Chamber of Representatives by a bipartisan group of MPs.
Green, 30, was condemned to death for the murder of Andrew Lastrapes Jr. during a robbery in Houston in 1992, when he was just over 18 years old.
"Green was sentenced to death in a trial conditioned by a substandard and unskilled defence and the case raises many doubts as to the actual guilt of the condemned man," the motion states.
Deputy Speaker Alfredo Biondi (FI) is the first signatory, seconded by Fabrizio Vigni (Ds), Franco Grillini (Ds), Marco Boato (Verdi), Paolo Cento (Greens), Gregorio Fontana (FI), Nichi Vendola (Prc), Enrico Nan (FI), Carlo Taormina (FI), Gaetano Pecorella (FI), Enzo Fragala' (An), Giovanni Russo Spena (Prc), Alfonso Gianni (Prc), Anna Finocchiaro (Ds) and Renzo Innocenti (Ds).
The deputies intend to bind the government to action, given that the Italian parliament has repeatedly taken a stand against the death penalty. The signatories of the motion have petitioned Speaker Pier Ferdinando Casini to include it in the order of the day in good time to help stay Green's execution.
