Two Palestinians accused of spying for Israel met their deaths in the most brutal manner. People in Bethlehem said the two alleged collaborators were shot at 4am by members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a group affiliated to [Palestinian President Yasser] Arafat's Fatah organisation. They were hunted down after escaping from prison in the town when the building was reduced to a mound of rubble by an Israeli F16 fighter jet.
Mahmoud Sabateen's bullet-ridden corpse was dragged like a rag doll - one arm stretched out in supplication - through the streets by rope tied to the back of a pick-up truck. It was dumped in Manger Square, his green jumper pulled up to reveal the chest wound from which his blood seeped on to the ancient stones.
A crowd of 500 cheered as masked gunmen brandishing M16 assault rifles tried to hang it from a lamppost outside the Church of the Nativity. A witness armed with a rifle told The Mirror: "Those two men were traitors and deserve everything they got.
"They were brought here as a warning to others." One of the men was accused of helping to boobytrap the car which killed militia commander Atef al-Bayyat in October 2001.
Aman said: "They caused the death of many Palestinians. "They gave information to the Israelis in exchange for money, women, drugs and cigarettes. They have been executed and that's that."
Palestinians in Bethlehem, which lies just south of Jerusalem, have killed seven alleged collaborators since an uprising against Israeli occupation began in September 2000.
