Two Russian men were sentenced to life in prison on charges of complicity in the assassination of Chechen separatist Zelimkhan Yandarbiev. The court in Doha, Qatar, sentenced them to life in imprisonment. Prosecutors had reportedly sought the death penalty in the case that had threatened to strain relations between Russia and Qatar. The Russians were arrested in the Qatari capital, Doha, in February on suspicion of planting a bomb that killed Zelimkhan Yandarbiev, a former Chechen president and rebel leader. Russia has denied involvement in Yandarbiev's killing and said the defendants were gathering information about terrorism. Yandarbiev had lived in Qatar since 2000. Moscow had sought his extradition on charges of terrorism and links to al-Qaeda. The United Nations and Washington had also linked him to terrorism.
