Two thieves who murdered many of their victims were sentenced to death for killing 12 people and injuring 58 others in Beijing over the past two years.
One of the pair, Jiao Wenjun, had a criminal record dating back to 1989, including the shooting of a man on a construction site and escape from custody. Fellow defendant Ma Jun had stabbed people to death in Beijing.
Jiao, then 29 and from Liaoning province, and Ma, aged 23 and from Inner Mongolia, moved to Beijing in 1999, according to a report in the Legal Daily. They were both unemployed.
Between August 1999 and August 2000, Jiao and Ma would await their victims in underpasses and on bridges in two of Beijing's more affluent districts and beat them with an iron bar or knife them and steal their money.
About 70 people were robbed, according to the Beijing Daily. One of four plaintiffs in a related civil case, Yu Ruomei, aged 60, lost a son to the pair in June 2000 in an east Beijing underpass, the newspaper reported. The civil suit demanded 130,000 yuan compensation for loss.
After the hearing Ma apologised to his victims, their families, and his mother, though noting his regret came too late. Jiao made no comment.
