One of two men involved in a tragic hostage drama in December 2000 in Shenyang, which left one victim dead and two seriously injured, was executed.
Yang Baolin was shot immediately after the Shenyang City Intermediate People's Court sentenced him to death, the Liaoshen Evening News reported. He was sentenced on robbery and illegal possession of firearms charges. The Shenyang-based newspaper said that the court simultaneously awarded surviving victim Zhao Xinqing, 29, 478 yuan for economic losses claimed in her civil suit.
Yang and Wang Qunchao, a wanted fugitive, broke into the home of Wang Jiang and his wife Zhao Xinqing in December. A fight ensued, in which Ms Zhao was stabbed six times in the face, chest and back, while her maid suffered a minor gunshot wound.
Both women were able to flee and call police for help. Wang Jiang, who was also injured during the fight, was taken hostage by the two men. Hundreds of police surrounded the apartment after evacuating neighbouring residents. The stand-off finally came to a head nearly 24-hours later, when police burst into the apartment at dawn after they realised that there was no sound coming from the flat. Upon gaining access to the crime scene, they found the bodies of Wang Jiang, who had been murdered, and Wang Qunchao, who had committed suicide. Although Yang Baolin had also tried to kill himself, he failed, and was apprehended by police.
According to the Liaoshen Evening News report, Yang Baolin visibly shook when the verdict was read out.
