UAE deported Mohamed al-Zawahri, deputy leader of Egypt's Jihad (Holy War) group, to Cairo, said a London-based Islamist, Yasser el-Serri, who runs the Islamic Observation Centre pressure group. Zawahri, his brother, Jihad leader Ayman al-Zawahri and seven other Jihad members were handed death sentences in their absence in April, 1999 by a military court. They were among 107 defendants in the biggest single trial of suspected militants since the 1981 assassination of Sadat. Official Egyptian sources stated that the UAE has not extradited Mohamed al-Zawahri to Cairo.
