UGANDA. SIX SOLDIERS SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER OF MILITARY OFFICER

six Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers were sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Lt. Christopher Abaasa. The convicts, a lance corporal and five soldiers at the rank of private, were sentenced to death by the Division Court Martial sitting at Kabamba Military Training School in Mubende District.
Military sources said the convicts were Lance Corporal Emmanuel Emenyu, an officer in charge of the ammunition store at Kabamba Barracks, privates Bob Anican, Herbert Ssebunya, Moses Lutalo, Denis Byaruhanga and Vincent Mutyaba, all from the same barracks.
Brig Geoffrey Taban presided over the trial session, which began on September 6.
The court found the six guilty of murdering Abaasa. In the gruesome incident, the soldiers stopped a taxi bus at Kyakasa, about 2km from the barracks, and robbed the passengers. Abaasa was identified by the soldiers as one of the officers who were undergoing a military course at Kabamba. They pulled him out of the vehicle and shot him several times so as to prevent him from identifying them in the future. He died instantly.
"After going through the submissions by the prosecution and the defence counsel, this court has established there is enough evidence to implicate you in the murder and robbery. We hereby sentence you to death," Taban said in the ruling. The accused were thereafter put in military vehicle under heavy security and transferred to Luzira Maximum Prison.
