Uganda's Appeals Court upheld the death sentence against former Toro prime minister John Sanyu Katuramu. In a two-to-one decision, the Court said High Court Justice John Bosco Katutsi [in September 2001] rightly convicted Katuramu for the murder of Toro Prince Charles Happy Kijanangoma. The prince and Steven Kaganda alias Mulokole, a private security guard, were gunned down on May 25, 1999 at Palace View Bar in Fort Portal. The three justices unanimously upheld the conviction and the death sentence against Alex Twinomugisha alias Twine, a former National Resistance Army Kadogo (child fighter), and Patrick Kwezi, Katuramu's nephew, over the same charges. Deputy Chief Justice Laetitia Mukasa Kikonyogo and Justice Amos Twinomujuni concurred, saying the evidence of Philly Babara, the manager of the Palace View Bar, corroborated Twinomugisha's confession statement. Twinomugisha implicated Kwezi as the man who co-ordinated the murder plot and paid out the money which Katuramu allegedly provided. However, Justice S.G. Engwau, said there was no incriminating evidence against Katuramu in the Kijanangoma murder.
