Uganda's Supreme Court confirmed that former Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs during Obote II regime, Anthony Okwonga, is to hang for murder.
Okwonga, in his late 70s, was convicted by the High Court in Gulu of shooting dead Veneranda Pinyanga on June 3, 1980, after shooting and injuring her mother Acelma Giriker in the arm at Angal village, Nyaruvur Division, Nebbi District.
He suspected them to be among the people who had attacked his home in Angal village.Justice Opio Aweri, the trial judge, convicted Okwonga of kidnapping with intent to murder Jorudano Onen, brother of Pinyanga. He also convicted him of attempted murder of Giriker.
Aweri had sentenced Okwonga to 15 years imprisonment for attempted murder of Giriker and kidnapping Onen with intent to murder him, but the imprisonment sentences were suspended as he had been sentenced to death for killing Pinyanga.
The Supreme Court being the last appellate court of the land, Okwonga is now left with only the prerogative of mercy of the President.
