UNITED KINGDOM. DEPORTATION RISK FOR TEN PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR TERRORISM

ten foreign nationals considered to pose a terrorist threat were detained in the last 24 hours by British police, with the intention of deporting them to their home countries.
Amongst them was also Abu Qatada, the fundamentalist preacher nicknamed “Al Qaida’s ambassador” to Europe, sentenced to life in Jordan for a series of terrorist attacks.
The raids by Scotland Yard and immigration authorities took place in Leicester, London, Luton and the West Midlands. The arrests followed a deal on August 10 between London and Jordan in which Ammam gave assurances it would not torture or sentence to death those expelled to the country.
According lawyers of those detained, the expulsions are against European human rights laws, signed by Great Britain, whilst the guarantees made by certain states, where torture and abuse are common, are worth little. According to the Human Rights Act Britain cannot deport anyone to a country where they risk being persecuted. As well as Jordan, those arrested come from Libya and Algeria, countries with disputable human rights records.
