United Nations officials said Indonesian troops and police supervised the East Timorese Oecussi massacre on September 8, 1999. The officials that the East Timorese selected for execution were first taken into West Timor, where they were registered by Indonesian officials before being hacked to death by a militia squad armed with machetes. The remains of up to 45 people killed in Oecussi were taken to a Dili morgue on February 6, where they were blessed by a Catholic priest.
