United Nations officials say a special court being set up in Sierra Leone to try people accused of war crimes during the decade-long civil war will be able to give out jail terms but not death sentences.
Ralph Zacklin, who heads the planning mission helping establish the court, says the UN has taken as a matter of principle that the tribunals do not resort to capital punishment.
The United Nations decided in 2000 to set up the court to try people accused of atrocities during the Sierra Leone's civil war.
About 200 000 people were killed and thousands more deliberately mutilated in the conflict.
