U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry of St. Louis has vacated the death sentence for Reginald Clemons.
Judge Perry ruled that 6 prospective jurors were improperly excluded from the jury pool during the penalty phase of Clemons' trial. The ruling said the prospective jurors were improperly removed because they expressed reservations about imposing the death penalty.
Clemons' conviction stands, and unless the ruling is overturned, he will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Clemons, now 30, was 1 of 4 men convicted of pushing sisters Julie and Robin Kerry to their deaths off the old Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis on April 4, 1991.
