A Calhoun County jury recommends 11-1 the death penalty for Nicholas Smith, 24, Black, a man convicted of killing Kevin Thompson, 29, Black. Smith admitted in a statement to police he cut Thompson's throat and stabbed him to death in April 2011, but claimed someone else made him do it. Calhoun County Circuit Judge Brian Howell will sentence Smith in September, and the judge is not bound by the jury's recommendation. 2 other suspects in the case are set to go to trial sometime next year.
