10th death row inmate dies from COVID-19. Death row inmate Johnny Avila Jr. died from what appears to be COVID-19 complications at an outside hospital on Sunday, according to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The exact cause of death has not yet been released. A total of 47 state prison inmates have now died after contracting the coronavirus. Avila, 62, Hispanic, was sentenced to death in Fresno County on March 21, 1996, for the 1991 rape and murders of Dorothy Medina and Arlene Sanchez.
