USA - Florida. A jury sentenced Doug Matthews to death

A Volusia County jury recommended 10-2 the death penalty for Doug Matthews. Matthews, 28, black, was found guilty Tuesday in the February 20, 2008 deaths of Kirk Zoeller, 50, and Donna Trujillo, 52, who were each stabbed multiple times in the chest, neck and head. The death penalty was sought for Zoeller's killing but could not be considered for the death of Trujillo. A key eyewitness testified he saw the stabbing of Zoeller but not Trujillo. The jury found Matthews guilty of manslaughter instead of intentional murder in her slaying. Circuit Judge R. Michael Hutcheson will make a decision on the sentence in coming weeks.
