John Richard Marek was executed tonight. Marek was convicted along with Raymond Wigley in the June 17, 1983 kidnapping, rape and murder of Adela Marie Simmons, 45. Marek's was the 68th Florida execution since the death penalty was reinstated in 1979. Marek becomes the 2nd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Florida. Marek also becomes the 37th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1173rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
