Juan Carlos Chavez was executed. Chavez, 46, from Cuba, had been sentenced to death in 1998, accused of being  the sex predator who kidnapped, raped and killed 9-year-old Jimmy Ryce in 1995. Juan Carlos Chavez plead guilty in November 1998, confessing that on September 11, 1995, he kidnapped the boy after threatening him with a gun as he stepped off the school bus after classes. The man said he kept Jimmy locked in a trailer, where he raped him and when the boy attempted to escape, he shot him to death. The boy's body was dismembered and placed in pots before being covered in concrete. That shook Florida's sense of security and spurred legislation allowing the state to indefinitely detain sexual predators. Chavez becomes the 2nd inmate to be put to death this year in Florida, the 83rd overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1979.A on July 2, 1976, the 8th inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1367th overall since the nation resumed executions on january 17, 1977.
