Robert Newland, 65, white, was put to death at the state prison at Jackson. Newland was convicted in 1987 and sentenced to death for the May 1986 slaying of Carol Sanders Beatty, 27. Authorities say Newland went to the woman's duplex after a drinking binge and tried to kiss her. They say he drew a knife and stabbed her repeatedly after she refused his advances. She would die hours later, shortly after identifying Newland as the killer to police. Newland becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Georgia, the 19th this year in the USA and the 1155th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
