June 9, 2023 - Illinois. (HB 3762) Governor JB Pritzker signed HB 3762 removing all mentions related to capital punishment from criminal codes. The new law updates existing criminal codes to remove mentions related to capital punishment. Sponsored by Will Guzzardi (D), the bill passed House on March 24, 2023 with 66 votes for, 36 votes against. It passed Senate on May 4, 2023 with 37 votes for, 19 votes against. It was signed by JB Pritzker (D) on June 9, 2023. It will become effective on January 1, 2024.
